Stage 3 Canberra Excursion

27 Jun 2016

St Bernadette's Dundas students on Canberra excursion

Last week, Stage 3 went on their overnight excursion to Canberra, staying overnight between 9-10 June. A great adventure was had by all and the children represented St Bernadette’s with pride at all times.

During the course of the two days many different venues were visited, all with tremendous educational value. Aside from this, all venues were a hit with the children and will be remembered for many years to come.

The trip was action packed and ran to a tight schedule. Here are some of the highlights!

DAY 1
In Parliament House, the children were treated to fantastic role-plays which helped them to learn about our houses of government.

At the Australian War Memorial they were given time to reflect in the Shrine of Remembrance. They also were taken on a tour by knowledgeable guides who gave them a deep insight into our military past and present.

We were extremely fortunate to see many elite athletes in training at the Australian Institute of Sport. We were amazed by the acrobatic skills of our gymnasts and looked in awe at the sheer height of our volleyball under 19’s. We were very impressed by the fitness and strengths of the athletes in the training room. Finally, we saw a real life Olympic Champion training in the pool; Alicia Coutts!

After all of this excitement the children were treated to a delicious dinner of lasagne, salad and bread rolls. A game of trivia followed this and then off to bed we went.

DAY 2
Breakfast was a huge selection of scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast, cereal, juice and baked beans. Yes, baked beans before a 4 hour bus ride!

Day two was just as action packed, starting Old Parliament House, where our children took part in the democratic process by voting for their favourite fruit. Please don’t be mistaken - this isn’t a thinly veiled swipe at our political leaders, it really was fruit. Through the preferential system, apples were the winner on the day. In the Museum of Democracy the children saw the old House of Representatives and Senate. Our guide gave many valuable insights about the history Australian Democracy.

St Bernadette's Dundas

Following a quick lunch break, our final destination before returning home was Questacon. This brilliant and interactive science exhibit lived up to all expectations. The children were thrilled by the lightning machine, horrified by the animatronic spider and defied gravity on the Free Fall.

Now for the final journey home, with the much anticipated stop at McDonalds. After many burgers, nuggets, fries, sundaes and cookies, we departed for Dundas Valley. What a trip!

The children of St Bernadette’s were a true credit to the school, conducting themselves in a dignified and respectful manner at all times. We are very proud of them all.

This morning, we gathered as a school community to celebrate Mass and the Rite of Baptism. Congratulations to the students from our school and their siblings, who received the Sacrament of Baptism today. We feel truly blessed to have shared in the special and joyful occasion with you. May God continue to guide and bless each of you as you grow in faith, hope and love. We also extend our sincere thanks to Father Andrew for leading this special mass and for guiding our school community in faith with such warmth and care. A heartfelt thank you to Dr Nicholas Ng for leading our choir and to all the students who sang so beautifully, helping to make this celebration even more meaningful.

On Friday, our school community came together for a meaningful day of prayer, reflection and action as part of our Vinnies Winter Appeal and Vinnies Sleepout Experience. During the school day, our Kindergarten to Year 3 students explored the importance of compassion, kindness and caring for those in need through prayer and reflection. In the evening, our Year 4–6 students participated in the Vinnies Sleepout Experience, spending time outdoors with minimal comforts, sharing a simple meal of rice, and reflecting on the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness in our community. We were also privileged to welcome Pat McArdle from the Carlingford Vinnies Conference, who shared valuable insights into the work of St Vincent de Paul and the importance of serving others with dignity and compassion. #faithinactioncspd

This morning, we were delighted to welcome our wonderful grandparents to our school for a special celebration. Our Stage 2 students led a beautiful liturgy. Grandparents also joined in some fun games that highlighted the generation gap, creating plenty of laughter and memorable moments. Afterwards, grandparents visited classrooms before enjoying a cup of tea together to conclude the celebration. A heartfelt thank you to all our grandparents for sharing this special morning with us. Today we had the pleasure of welcoming 36 students from Tokyo Minami Tama High School to St Bernadette's for a wonderful day of cultural exchange and connection. Our students enjoyed working alongside our visitors throughout the day, sharing learning experiences, building new friendships, and discovering more about each other's cultures. We also enjoyed a delicious meal together, providing the perfect opportunity to chat, laugh, and connect. A highlight of the day was being entertained by our Japanese visitors, who delighted us with beautiful singing, patiently taught us the art of origami, and introduced us to the fun and fast-paced chopstick game! Experiences like these remind us that friendship, kindness, and curiosity transcend language and distance. We are incredibly grateful to the students and staff from Tokyo Minami Tama High School for sharing their culture and creating such special memories with our school community.

Today, our staff put our Faith into Action at Ronald McDonald House, Westmead. β€οΈπŸ’› We began the day in prayer, reflecting together and deepening our understanding of Catholic Social Teaching, reminding us of our shared call to serve others with compassion and dignity. We were privileged to tour the incredible house and see firsthand the wonderful support and facilities provided for families caring for their sick or injured children. Throughout the day, our staff served in different ways. Some took part in the Cook & Connect program, preparing a delicious lunch for the families staying at the house, while others rolled up their sleeves to tidy the gardens and clean the hired strollers, helping to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for everyone. We concluded our day with a Faith in Action reflection, making meaningful connections between our acts of service and Scripture and recognising how even small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference. "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." β€” Galatians 6:2 We are grateful for the opportunity to serve, to learn, and to live out our faith. Thank you to Ronald McDonald House Westmead for the warm welcome and for the incredible work you do to support families when they need it most. πŸ’™
