St Bernadette's Primary Dundas Valley has won the NSW Space Discovery Program Industry Award.
The award was presented at the recent showcase event, which included 14 schools from around the state, with St Bernadette's and St Thomas Aquinas Primary Springwood representing Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD).
Judges were very impressed with the project from the St Bernadette's team, which focused on addressing problems faced by people in war torn countries. The students identified access to food supplies during times of conflict as an area of need. Inspired by freeze dried foods originally developed for space missions, the innovative young thinkers designed a drone delivery system powered by solar energy.
The NSW Space Discovery program is a space education program for NSW primary schools delivered by The Andy Thomas Space Foundation (ATSF) and technology education (EdTech) company Makers Empire, in partnership with the NSW Government.
"The level of student engagement was amazing,” said the St Bernadette’s teachers.
St Bernadette's Primary Dundas Valley sent two teams of students from Years 5 and 6 to the showcase, while St Thomas Aquinas Primary Springwood sent two teams from Years 4 and 5.
Participation in the program includes professional development for teachers, 3D design software, hardware, tools and resources from Makers Empire, a new Space Discovery Challenge Course in the Makers Empire app, and a student showcase for students to come together and share their learning.

“We enjoyed discovering more about space, learning about the 3D design process, and seeing the creative ideas that other schools had,” said Nele, a student at St Thomas Aquinas. “It allowed us to collaborate with other students who had similar interests, making it a rewarding learning experience," added Bede.
"It was inspiring to see how engaged the students were and how much they grew from the experience," said teachers from St Thomas Aquinas. "They learned to collaborate effectively and became more confident in sharing their ideas with professionals and peers from other schools.”
Students worked tirelessly all term and with the support of their teachers, used Makers Empire 3D design software, to bring their ideas to life.
"These programs are so beneficial," said Clare Willemse, CSPD Digital Learning Specialist Teacher. "It has been a privilege for my colleague Rachael Usher and I, supporting these wonderful schools and seeing their projects come to life. I was so proud seeing the students present their amazing designs and projects. It was a wonderful experience to see students grow in their problem solving, digital learning and stem skills to share their creativity to answer a need linked to Space."
"All the designs and research were fascinating, and even though only two groups won, we were all winners in the end,” said Alice, a student at St Thomas Aquinas Primary Springwood.

Today, our staff put our Faith into Action at Ronald McDonald House, Westmead. ❤️💛 We began the day in prayer, reflecting together and deepening our understanding of Catholic Social Teaching, reminding us of our shared call to serve others with compassion and dignity. We were privileged to tour the incredible house and see firsthand the wonderful support and facilities provided for families caring for their sick or injured children. Throughout the day, our staff served in different ways. Some took part in the Cook & Connect program, preparing a delicious lunch for the families staying at the house, while others rolled up their sleeves to tidy the gardens and clean the hired strollers, helping to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for everyone. We concluded our day with a Faith in Action reflection, making meaningful connections between our acts of service and Scripture and recognising how even small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference. "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." — Galatians 6:2 We are grateful for the opportunity to serve, to learn, and to live out our faith. Thank you to Ronald McDonald House Westmead for the warm welcome and for the incredible work you do to support families when they need it most. 💙

Yesterday, Stage 3 proudly showcased their Science and History learning from Term 2. In Science, students demonstrated their understanding of electrical circuits by creating a circuit and explaining the transfer and transformation of energy with just one flick of a switch. For History, students presented a range of creative projects, including podcasts, videos, dioramas, board games and more, showcasing their understanding of the voting rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and women. Their engaging displays highlighted creativity and hands-on learning and they confidently shared their knowledge with visitors. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and the impressive progress they have made throughout the term. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and the confidence they displayed in celebrating their learning.

Year 5 welcomed Fr Andrew to their class synod. Students collectively identified issues requiring attention and proposed potential solutions. The Year 5 synod addressed topics such as screen addiction, bullying, homelessness, poverty and school fee relief, connecting their solutions to Catholic Social Teaching and scripture. Fr Andrew commenced and concluded the synod with prayer. We appreciate Fr Andrew’s Catholic insights into these contemporary issues.

Today, our St Mary MacKillop Award students participated in a Vinnies Encounter Day, reflecting on the call to build a just and compassionate society. Through meaningful discussions and activities, students explored the message that social justice is a call to love your neighbour and considered how they can put this into action in their everyday lives. The day connected to our upcoming Term 3 Vinnies Winter Sleep-In initiative, highlighting the Catholic Social Teaching principle of solidarity and encouraging students to stand alongside those experiencing hardship in our community. We are proud of the way our students engaged with the day, demonstrating compassion, empathy and a commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others.
